Seussical the Musical

Thank you to everyone who attended and helped make Pleasure Guild of Nationwide Children’s Hospital’s 2012 rendition of Seussical a great success.

“Seussical the Musical,” Pleasure Guild’s 55th production, was performed March 2, 3 and 4, 2012 at the Palace Theatre in Columbus.

“Seussical” is a fantastical, magical musical extravaganza. Tony winners Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty have brought to life favorite Dr. Seuss characters including Horton the Elephant, The Cat in the Hat, Gertrude McFuzz, lazy Mayzie and a little boy with a big  imagination—Jojo. “Oh, The Thinks You Can Think” captures the show’s spirit of imagination, as the colorful characters transport us from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus and the invisible world of the “Whos.”

The story centers around Horton the Elephant, who finds himself faced with a challenge. Not only must he protect his tiny friend Jojo and all “Whos” from a world of dangers, but he must also guard an egg abandoned by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. Although Horton faces ridicule and danger, Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him and recognizes “his kind and powerful heart.” Ultimately the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community emerge triumphant in a story that makes you laugh and cry.

Celebrating Our Rich History and a Bright Tomorrow

Pleasure Guild’s first play, “Hansel and Gretel,” was produced in 1958 at the Columbus Gallery of Fine Arts. From this humble beginning, our annual play has grown into a full-scale theater production – known and respected throughout Columbus and beyond – which raises upwards of $200,000 each year for Nationwide Children’s Hospital. With more than 20 years of performances at The Palace Theatre, Pleasure Guild members do it all – from marketing and public relations to costume and prop coordination. Because of state-of-the-art promotional tools and technology made available to us by the hospital and an experienced creative team, we are able to produce Broadway-quality, family friendly shows. With four public performances and one free performance given each year for more than 2,700 inner-city school children, these annual productions continue to be our leading fundraising project. Two hundred free tickets are given away for each regular performance to ensure that everyone has a chance to experience the theater experience. For some of these children, it is their first exposure to the stage. View more than 50 years  of past Pleasure Guild productions.
